Don’t self-edit yourself short. In creative, one of the earliest and hardest lessons we must learn is to think, write and create freely unafraid of making mistakes.
Not just “be dangerous.” Be careless with language and wild with logic. Go on tangents. Wander through the wilderness that is your brain. It’s not easy at first, probably because freewriting is one of the most organic things you can do.
And like it or not, we people are not all that good with being organic about things these days. Same as the creative, we all can stand to not self-edit ourselves. Out of jobs (I don’t have the experience they’re looking for), out of opportunities (who am I to run a company?).
But maybe if we freed ourselves to think first of what we *could* be doing…and then *what else* we could be doing from there. Once you had all those ideas of what you’re capable of down on paper…then think of what you *should* do. We’re all guilty of self-editing our thoughts, behaviors and choices. And we all should!
But not at the beginning.
Consider this your friendly reminder to make time to wonder and wander a bit. You never know what you might stumble into next. A business. A book. A wonderful new client. I’m just thankful for all that I’ve stumbled into so far in 2026 as the year continues to bring so many gifts.
